Symbolism of Purity

How do you describe purity? How do you depicted purity? A couple of weeks ago I was commissioned to design an image that screamed purity in all it forms. The picture was to be an inspiration and encouragement to the person that was receiving the gift. The message was to never stop reaching for purity and that there is constant grow involved in a person that chooses to live a pure purpose drive life dedicated to God.

A lady in white is a common sign for purity in both Greek and Mediaeval art work. In this piece I was asked to use the White Lady of Rohan dress from “The Lord of the Rings Return of the King”.In the maiden’s hair you can see a net of pearls according to some source the pearl means purity or virtue. Underneath the pearls you will find the celtic knot of the Trinity and three white roses, these also has hundreds of meanings I chose them to show that we can find purity in the Father, Son, Holy Spirit. The three white roses show that the Trinity is one like in the knot but is also three separate people.  Woven into the braid are three stones two white and one red. The two white stone symbolize the purity if the body while the red stone represents purity of the mind and emotions.

Sense ancient times Asian cultures have held the Lotus as a symbol of purity. The lotus shows different stages of purity depending on how it is depicted. A white lotus shows the purity of body and red shows the purity of mind and heart. A blooming lotus symbolizes the purity that the person has achieved, while a closed lotus illustrates the potential that the person has and growth that is still in progress. The ripples in the water symbolize that if someone is willing to walk pure and righteous for the Lord they will make a difference in their surroundings.

In the background we can see that white birch create a path way lining the water edge and show the path the maiden has chosen to take. In Celtic lore white birch symbolize growth, strength, loyalty, purity, and renewal. The white stag is a timeless symbol showing up in cultures all around the world with a hundreds of different meanings. In a mediaeval lore knights and kings are always chasing or hunting a white stag but can never reach it. The white stag is a symbol of divine purity something we can never achieve as humans, but we should alway strive to reach and never give up the chase.

The reason I painted the maiden in water is because water is constantly changing and being renewed by rain or other sources. Water also washes away the dirt from are bodies and has been used Biblical as sign of washing away sins and becoming a new creation when Christ is Lord of are lives.

While that is it! I hope you enjoyed the description of the symbolism and I hope you have taken something away that you did not know before. If you did please comment and let me know what it was and if you have any deeper questions about this piece please don’t hesitate to ask them. Thanks for reading! Stand Strong my friends.

Standing on the Promises

Standing on the promises of God, what does that mean? What are the promises of God? These are two questions I had today so with the gears of my mind spinning I went to go search them out. I did some Bible study using Logos I found a few answers to one of my questions. The promises of God are

  • The gift of the Holly Spirit (Luke 24:49, Acts 1:4)
  • The fulness of life and eternal life (Hebrews 12:16)
  • The Resurrection (John 5:29)
  • The forgiveness of sin (1 John 1:9)
  • The presence of God ( Exodus 3:12)
  • The peace of God (Romans 5:1)

This is only a short list out of all that I found, I picked that ones that are most importuned  to me. So for the next question what does standing on the promises of God mean, well to the best ability it means to ponder, pray, and study daily the promises that God has given to us to pull us forward in are lives as believers in Christ.

With promises like this to pull us on, dear friends, let’s make a clean break with everything that defiles or distracts us, both within and without. Let’s make our entire lives fit and holy temples for the worship of God. (2 Corinthians 7:1, The Message)

Here is my newest sunday sermon sketch it illustrates a Christian in the midst of a howling storm of doubt and fear, fear of what you mighty wonder well for me it’s fear life, fear of the unknown, fear of the future, and fear of failing. In the sketch you will see that if that Christian moved he would be swept away but if he stands strong on the promises of God he is safe from the storm. Note that even thou he is safe he can still see the fierceness of the storm around him that is where faith in Gods promises comes in.

Standing on the Promises

STANDING ON THE PROMISES
by Debra Snipes

Standing on the promises of Christ my King,
Through eternal ages let His praises ring,
Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,
Standing on the promises of God.Standing, standing,
Standing on the promises of God my Savior;
Standing, standing,
I’m standing on the promises of God.Standing on the promises that cannot fail,
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
By the living Word of God I shall prevail,
Standing on the promises of God.Standing on the promises I now can see
Perfect, present cleansing in the blood for me;
Standing in the liberty where Christ makes free,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises of Christ the Lord,
Bound to Him eternally by love’s strong cord,
Overcoming daily with the Spirit’s sword,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises I cannot fall,
Listening every moment to the Spirit’s call
Resting in my Savior as my all in all,
Standing on the promises of God.

Well those are my thoughts for the week please comment and tell me what you think and if its something God used to speak to in any way tell some one about it start a conversation. Tell next week Stand Strong my friends in Christ.

Inspiration

Well I have surfaced from the chaos and confusion that has been my life for the past month, what was the chaos well my big sister got married it is amazing how much planing and preparation  goes into one day. One things I noticed in the planing of the wedding was that all the decorating was inspired by a book, magazine someone else wedding, that got me thanking where do most artist get their inspiration. I did some research I look at some of the old greek and roman art finding that most of their art was inspired by the human body

the Aztecs got their inspiration  from death

then I did a more modern search and found that most artist today get inspired from emotionsAfter all my research I still had one thing was still had one question, me as a Christian artist where should I get my inspiration?  most people would simple answer the Bible, so I went back and researched some more, most Christian art inspired by the Bible was either really old or  was really weird  and most of the art was very hard to understand. I thank why most of them were hard to understand  was that the artist spiritualized everything. So yes I could get my inspiration from the Bible and try to make it as clear as possible but then I thought why not get inspired  from the person that inspired  the Bible God. So my goal this year is to ask God what He would like me to paint. it’s going to take  a while to get used to stop and pray every time I started to draw. My prayer time in the morning from now on is going to be done with sketch book in lap and pencil in hand. I’ll keep you posted on how it turns out but for now stand strong in speech, conduct, purity, and faith. CHAZAQ

The Work is Done!!!!

Ok, I’m back and have more of a plan of what my blog is going to be this year, instead of me just posting random picture throughout the week my art is  going to have a theme,a description, and a purpose. I will be making time lapses videos of the art in all its stages, so here is the first one of hopefully many to come.

Fighting for Purity

Purity

Purity : What is purity? pure, white, clean, seeking Gods desires not are own, Free from the thoughts of this world. In art purity is usually , a white rose,a maiden, or an angle. In my painting I chose to use a white tuple because tuple petals have a wax like coating on them that stops stuff (sin) from muddying the color (purity) of the tuple.

Sin: The storm cloud in the painting is the sin trying to corrupt  purity and cut is off from God notice that even though the sin is trying to hide God from us, God is always visible. The black cloth on the cross is  my sin that Christ has taken away to give me purity.

Christ

Christ

Life: The red swirls at the bottom symbolize life. Life is not as dark as sin but the business of it can distract us from what matters most. God
